Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel and Spinoff Already Being Planned

Sony Pictures Animation isn’t waiting to see how critics and fans respond to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with a report claiming the studio is already working on a sequel. Not only that, but a spinoff is in the works, too.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender) has been tapped to direct the sequel, which will aim to further expand Spidey’s animated universe with new stories and villains. Meanwhile, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helped bring the upcoming animated movie to life, are also expected to be involved.

Additionally, Sony has tapped Lauren Montogomery (Netflix’s Voltron) to direct a spinoff focused on the female heroes in the Spider-Man universe. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, audiences will be introduced to Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), both of whom will likely be in the spinoff.

Following the release of Venom in October, Sony has quickly put in motion plans to further expand its Spider-Man universe. On the animated side, that means more attention on the characters being introduced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, including Miles Morales. On the live-action side, we’re expecting a sequel to Venom and a film based on Morbius the Living Vampire.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters on December 14.
