Tom Holland feels Tony Stark was the MCU version of Uncle Ben

As anyone who has ever read more than a few Spider-Man comics knows, the death of Peter’s Uncle Ben pretty much shaped him into the character we know and love. Despite four movies with Spider-Man already released, and a fifth moment away from hitting theaters, we still know nothing of Uncle Ben in the MCU.

There may be a reason for that.

In the midst of his gigantic promotional tour for the film, Tom Holland spoke with Uproxx in a wide ranging interview. Holland was asked if he felt that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) had become hiw version of an Uncle Ben, to which he replied, “I think he probably was. I think he probably was, you know? I think he was very, very much took on the mantle as his father figure, and losing him is a huge blow to Peter Parker obviously.” Holland went on to add, “and that’s what’s so nice about Mysterio kind of flying in is that he can fill those shoes a little bit and be Peter Parker’s mentor and his big brother at the same time.”

Perhaps we’ll never learn about the Uncle Ben of this iteration and we won’t have a clue why Aunt May is single, or even had a Ben in her life. For now we’ll just live with knowing that Peter seems to have had the mentor he needed, at least for a time.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 2.
