Jake Gyllenhaal Has Shocking Realization About Role in Spider-Man: Far From Home

It seems everyone knew Jake Gyllenhaal was playing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home except him.

In a new video posted to Instagram, the actor is seen looking at an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man featuring Mysterio, before coming to a shocking realization: he’s not playing Spider-Man.

Of course, the actor’s incredulous reaction is a joke, but it’s a fun way to confirm that he’s playing the villain in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Before today’s video, his involvement in the film hadn’t been officially announced.

In the comics, Mysterio (a.k.a. Quentin Beck) is a powerful illusionist and master hypnotist, with weapons that allow him to block Spider-Man’s spider-sense and also dissolve his webs. That should make him a great foe to Spidey on the big screen.

The timing of Gyllenhaal’s reveal comes on the eve of the Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil, where a teaser for Spider-Man: Far From Home is expected to drop this weekend.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is set to hit theaters on July 5, 2019.
