Marisa Tomei to play Peter Parker’s Aunt May in Marvel’s Spider-Man

Marisa Tomei stars as Aunt May in Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN™: HOMECOMING.

In a very interesting and unexpected bit  of casting, it has been revealed today that Marisa Tomei has been chosen by Marvel and Sony to play Aunt May in the upcoming reboot.

The 50 year old actress looks quite a bit younger than that, but her age makes sense seeing as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will only be 15 or 16 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The deal isn’t quite done, but Variety definitely makes it sound as if Tomei will be playing the character in the reboot next year. It’s interesting that Aunt May of all characters is the focus of the first piece of casting news we’ve heard since Marvel found their Spidey, but you have to believe we’ll hear more about the reboot’s villain/s and supporting cast soon.

Still, as May is such an important part of Peter’s life, it feels somewhat appropriate that Marvel would look to cast her so soon after Holland.

The site adds that Marvel and Sony are looking to lock down the cast in multi-picture deals before even finding a writer to work with director Jon Watts, so both studios are clearly determined to find the right group of actors to flesh out the world of Spider-Man.

Do you think they’ve made the right choice with The Wrestler and Trainwreck star?

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Tomei’s Aunt May might end up making a cameo appearance in Captain America: Civil War, explaining why they’ve cast her so soon…
