Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal's exit could affect 'Spider-Man' franchise

If haven’t heard, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal has stepped down, following the events from the massive Sony hack that took place late last year.

Variety says that the biggest decision that Pascal’s successor will have to make is how to handle the Spider-Man franchise. The Sony hacks revealed that there’s a lot of confusion as to which direction to take Spidey, and a new chairman may take a closer look at the deal that Marvel presented them with last year.

“Spider-Man” remains a cash cow, but the plans for expanding the Spidey universe through villain spinoffs and the next installment may be re-examined — since Pascal played the leading role pursuing that path. A new regime may take a stronger look at returning to the negotiation table with Marvel Studios over Spidey’s rights.

Pascal will stay in her current role until May, where she’ll then move onto a different role within Sony. Hopefully this summer Sony will make an official announcement so that fans have a clear understanding as to what to expect from Spider-Man.
