Venom or Venom/Carnage? We’re still not exactly sure what this long rumoured movie will end up being, but according to its director Alex Kurtzman, it sounds as if we should expect the spin-off to be much different in tone to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which he co-wrote and produced with Roberto Orci).
In a recent interview, Kurtzman was quick to point out the differences between the two , as well as how this will change the direction of the movie. “The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can’t do with Spider-Man. Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character.”
Regardless of which version of the anti-hero/villain that they end up going for – Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan or Flash Thompson – that’s definitely true!
As for his thoughts on how the newly formed Spider-Man Cinematic Universe compares to Marvel’s, Kurtzman revealed that he believes that Sony actually have the edge! “You know, Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2′s and 3′s in front of them from Marvel.”
Of course, his commitments to Venom and recent split from writing partner Roberto Orci means that he won’t be returning for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but he did have one bit of advice for whoever ends up taking over writing duties on the 2018 movie. “I think as long as it keeps staying true to character, and true to who Peter is, and putting him in interesting and complicated situations, it’ll survive. Because it’s so beloved – everybody loves Spider-Man.”
