Marvel steals the vacant release date slot left by 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4'

Ever the opportunists, Marvel Studios have snapped up the release date left vacant by The Amazing Spider-Man 4. Earlier today, Sony Pictures revealed that they had moved Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six to November 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to an undisclosed date in 2018.

That allowed the studios behind the likes of Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy to take that desirable May 4th, 2018 date for themselves, and with The Avengers hitting on May 4th, 2012 and Avengers: Age of Ultron set to be released on May 1st, 2015, it seems likely that they’ll use that slot for a third.

So, what does this mean for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise?

It’s hard to say. The fact that Sony would give up that release date may be a sign that they’re not confident they’ll be able to get the movie made in time, perhaps signalling the fact that director Marc Webb and/or star Andrew Garfield don’t want to return. The latter signed a three-picture deal however.

On the other hand, a long of fans are speculating that this could be a sign of some sort of Avengers/Spider-Man team-up! What do you guys think?
