New details on Mary Jane Watson’s scrapped appearance in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ revealed

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach may have refused to make the deleted scenes featuring Shailene Woodley’s appearance as Mary Jane Watson available on the Blu-ray release, but details about her role in the sequel have finally been revealed.

In a recent interview, concept artist Gregory Hill revealed that he worked on a piece which featured a confrontation between Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s father.

“In the script MJ and her father have recently moved in next door to Peter and his Aunt… He’s run into her a few times, and seen that her father has a habit of getting drunk and treating MJ badly. If I remember right, the scene I illustrated has her dad going into the garage, and suddenly getting hoisted upside down from the rafters….where he meets Spider-Man. And gets a dressing down for how badly he treats his daughter. I think that’s about the only MJ scene which was originally in the script… no, there was one other where she and Gwen briefly meet outside Peter’s house.”

Hill goes on to reveal that he believes that director Marc Webb had the set pictured above built upside down in order to allow Spider-Man to be able to walk around normally, showcasing his ability to stick to walls in the process.

Why they would cut out what sounds like a fun and touching introduction to the Mary Jane character is unclear then, but claims that what is described above would have somehow detracted from scenes involving Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) are now a little harder to buy into.

Though we’ll more than likely never get to see these scenes, it should be interesting to see whether Sony recasts Mary Jane for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or introduces her in a completely different way!
