The Sony Pictures Spider-Man universe is about to expand once again with Olivia Wilde set to direct a female-centric film.
According to Deadline, Wilde has signed on to direct a Spider-Man film with a female character at the center of the story. Katie Silberman is set to write the film while Amy Pascal will produce and Rachel O’Connor will serve as an executive producer.
Sony Pictures had no comment on the matter, but shortly after the news broke, Wilde quoted the article in a tweet and simply added a spider emoji.

Speculation is, of course, turning towards Spider-Woman as the female character, but there are more options. A Silk film has been rumored, and we can’t help but think of Spider-Gwen as well. Considering the success Wilde had with her teenage comedy Booksmart, a teenage Spider story could make some sense. Add in how popular the character was in Into the Spider-Verse, and it feels like Spider-Gwen very well could be the more logical choice.
There’s no indication at this time of when the film will be moving forward, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for it to be sure.
