In the video above, Drew Goddard confirms that Sinister Six was indeed set to be very much a Spider-Man movie, putting an end to speculation and rumours that the spinoff was set to focus solely on the bad guys. However, he also teases that there may have been some sort of twist on it being a traditional versus movie, and that’s a point he elaborated on in a separate interview.
“When you’re doing just a straightforward superhero movie, you don’t need a lot of villains. The focus is on one guy. I think with Sinister, it’s different. To me it’s less about too many villains and more about too many antagonists and there’s a distinction. You never say, like, The Dirty Dozen has too many characters. They’re all villains, or you could argue that. But they’re protagonists. The trick with Sinister, is that I was making everyone the protagonist and less about six-on-one and more about coming at it a little differently. That was the idea.”
That certainly sounds like an interesting approach, and could be an indication that the movie was going to loosely adapt Ultimate Six, a story which saw Spider-Man forced to become a member of the villainous team. Unfortunately, Goddard has refused to reveal who would have made up the roster of his Sinister Six, but did confirm that the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would have had very little bearing on who he ended up choosing.
“I felt strongly that I wanted this movie to just stand on its own. I feel like, in general, I get tired of these movies where they’re becoming too much of a puzzle for people to solve. I’m like, no, just have fun.”
There was so much Sinister Six set up at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that it’s hard to believe that wouldn’t have factored into the movie somehow, but you can’t blame Goddard for not wanting to utilise Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin!
For the time being, Sinister Six remains on the shelf of course, and it’s really unknown just how much of a chance it has of ever being made. Goddard certainly seems optimistic, but whether the movie would fit into Marvel’s plans is hard to say…
